Our Philosophy

Addiction can be demoralizing, and addicts are too often treated like lost causes. At Illinois Recovery Center, we believe in the dignity of each of our clients and their right to respect. We believe in providing the compassion, encouragement, and structure they need to conquer their addictions. We recognize the uniqueness of each person's individual battle with addiction and treat each client individually. We recognize the significant role that mental health plays in addiction and recovery and integrate treatment when there are issues of dual diagnosis. Each client will be treated with complete confidentiality and afforded the highest quality programs and care.

You’re Not Failing, You Just Need the Right Help

Substance use disorder (SUD) rarely shows up on its own. It often brings anxiety, depression, or trauma along with it, tangled altogether until it’s hard to tell where one struggle ends and the next begins.

If that cycle sounds familiar, you’re not failing. You just haven’t had the right kind of help yet. And that’s where we come in.

Who We Are

Illinois Recovery Center is a substance abuse treatment facility located in Swansea, just outside St. Louis, serving individuals across Illinois, from Belleville to Joliet and beyond.

As a Northern Illinois Recovery Center partner in care, we built our program around one belief: recovery works best when it treats the whole person and not just the addiction.

That translates into looking past the surface.

As mentioned, substance use disorder and alcohol use disorder hardly exist in isolation. They’re often tied to mental health disorders like bipolar disorder , unresolved trauma, or years of coping the only way you knew how. We focus on that connection, and we treat it.

We’re also Joint Commission (JCAHO) accredited, which means our standards for safety, ethics, and quality of care are held to the highest national benchmark in behavioral healthcare.

With us, you’re not just a diagnosis. Rather, you’re a person with a story, and we want to help you write the next chapter of it.

Our Philosophy: Treatment Built Around You

Addiction can leave you feeling like a number, just another file in a system that doesn’t see you.

We make sure to do things differently.

Every client who walks through our doors gets a personalized treatment plan, built around their history, their mental health issues, and their goals for recovery. After all, no two journeys look the same, so why would the treatment?

Here’s what that looks like in practice:

  • Individualized care plans that adapt as you progress
  • Dual diagnosis treatment for co-occurring mental health disorders
  • Evidence-based therapies, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and motivational interviewing (MI)
  • Private rooms that offer real rest and privacy
  • A team that treats you with dignity, not judgment

Our Full Continuum of Care

Recovery isn’t a single step. Rather, it’s a process. And you deserve a program that moves with you through every stage of it.

Medical Detox

Withdrawal can be unpredictable, even dangerous, without supervision. Our medical detox program manages those first days safely, easing withdrawal symptoms while our clinical team monitors you around the clock.

Residential Treatment

Once you’re stable, residential treatment (also called inpatient rehab) gives you space away from triggers to focus entirely on healing, supported by structure, community, and round-the-clock care.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

A partial hospitalization program offers intensive, full-day treatment while you sleep off-site. It’s a strong middle step for those ready for more independence.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Our intensive outpatient program lets you keep working, parenting, or attending school while still receiving multiple weekly therapy sessions. As such, this program is ideal for balancing real life with recovery.

Outpatient Rehab

For those further along, outpatient rehab provides ongoing support and accountability with the lightest treatment footprint.

Sober Living

And when you’re ready to transition home, our sober living option offers a substance-free environment surrounded by peers who understand exactly what you’re rebuilding.

Wherever you start, you don’t have to figure out which level is right alone. We’ll help you find it.

Medication-Assisted Treatment

Treating the Whole Picture: Dual Diagnosis and Mental Health

Substance use and mental health disorders are deeply connected. Illinois data statistics confirm this:

  • 1 in 5 Illinois adults experience a mental illness each year, totaling roughly 2,136,000 people statewide.
  • Around 494,000 Illinois adults live with a serious mental illness, conditions that often go hand-in-hand with substance use.
  • More than 531,000 Illinoisans reported needing mental health treatment but not receiving it, often due to cost or access barriers.

Needing help and getting help are two highly different things in Illinois right now. That gap is exactly where dual diagnosis treatment becomes essential.

Why We Treat Both Together

Treating substance use disorder without addressing what’s underneath it—whether that’s bipolar disorder, anxiety, depression, or trauma—rarely leads to lasting recovery.

Remember: one condition feeds the other.

Our dual diagnosis treatment approach means your mental health care and your substance use treatment happen under one roof, with one coordinated team.

In other words, you won’t be bounced between providers who aren’t talking to each other. You’ll have clinicians who understand how these conditions interact, and who treat them as the connected issues they are.

Therapy

Therapies That Help You Build Real Skills

Detox and structure give you stability. Meanwhile, therapy is what gives you the tools to keep that stability once treatment ends.

At Illinois Recovery Center, your therapeutic plan isn’t generic. We build it from a toolbox of evidence-based approaches, matched to what you genuinely need.

1. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive behavioral therapy is one of the most researched and effective approaches in mental health treatment, and for good reason.

It works on a simple idea:

Your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are connected. A negative thought triggers a feeling, that feeling drives a behavior, and the behavior reinforces the next round of thoughts.

For many people, that cycle is what keeps substance use disorder and alcohol use disorder in place.

In CBT, you work with a therapist to identify those patterns and replace them with healthier ones. It’s structured, present-focused, and gives you skills you can use long after sessions end.

2. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical behvior therapy builds on CBT but adds something many people in recovery desperately need: emotional regulation.

DBT teaches you how to sit with distress without reacting to it destructively, how to manage intense emotions, and how to communicate in relationships without everything falling apart.

If you’ve ever felt like your emotions control you instead of the other way around, DBT gives you the framework to change that.

3. Motivational Interviewing (MI)

Ambivalence about getting sober is normal, even expected. Motivational interviewing meets you exactly where you are, without judgment or pressure.

Rather than telling you what to do, your therapist helps you explore your own reasons for change. Doing so, strengthens the motivation that’s already inside you.

4. Group Therapy and Peer Support

Isolation fuels addiction. Conncetion, however, fights it.

Group therapy gives you a room full of people who understand your struggle because they’re living a version of it themselves.

You’ll process shared experiences, practice new coping skills in real time, and realize, often for the first time in a long while, that you’re not the only one carrying this weight.

5. 12-Step Program Integration

For clients who find value in peer-led recovery models, we incorporate 12-step program principles alongside clinical therapy.

Many clients attend AA, NA, or SMART Recovery meetings as part of their treatment. This helps you build a recovery community that extends outside of our walls.

6. Relapse Prevention Planning

Every therapy you engage in here builds toward one goal: a relapse prevention plan you can actually use.

We help you identify your personal triggers, build coping skills for high-risk moments, and create a concrete plan for what to do when life gets hard, because it will.

As such, recovery isn’t about avoiding difficulty forever. It’s about knowing exactly what to do when it shows up.

Together, these therapies don’t just treat the addiction in front of us. They rebuild the thinking patterns, emotional skills, and support systems that addiction wore down in the first place.

Comfort, Privacy, and Daily Structure

Treatment works best when you feel safe enough to actually engage in it. That’s why our facility in Swansea offers private rooms, giving you real rest after long days of therapy and group work.

Your days here follow intentional structure:

  • Morning built around movement and group education
  • Afternoons for process groups and creative expression
  • Evenings spent in community recovery meetings before winding down

Contarary to what you may think, this structure isn’t rigid for the sake of control. Instead, it’s designed to rebuild the routine that addiction stripped away from you.

Accessible Care: Insurance, Telehealth, and Flexibility

Quality treatment shouldn’t be out of reach. We accept most major insurance plans, along with Medicaid, and our admissions team will verify your coverage before you commit to anything.

Recovery also doesn’t stop at our front door. Through telehealth, you can continue therapy sessions remotely, whether you’ve stepped down to outpatient care or simply need flexibility around work and family.

Here’s what accessible care looks like with us:

  • Insurance verification handled before admission
  • Medicaid accepted
  • Telehealth options for ongoing therapy
  • Flexible scheduling across outpatient levels of care

All in all, cost and logistics shouldn’t be the reason you wait to get help.

Recovery Support After Treatment Ends

Recovery is an ongoing process, and we stay involved long after you complete your program.

Our recovery support services include alumni programming, continued access to relapse prevention planning, and connections to sober living and outpatient resources as you transition home.

Additionally, many clients stay connected through alumni meetings, building a community that outlasts their time in treatment.
